Something horrible is happening in our country. It’s been happening for a long time, but legally, since 1973. In Roe v. Wade the United States Supreme Court made a landmark decision saying it was acceptable and legal for a woman to abort her baby.
That’s when America bought the lie that a woman’s body—and what she did with it—were her business and hers alone. If a woman wanted to have unprotected sex with a person she was not in a committed relationship with, or if she just wasn’t quite ready for children, or if a nurse told her, “It’s just a blob of cells,” she could go in for a quick and easy abortion.
Sounds good. Reproductive rights . . . women’s right to choose . . .
Euphemisms work because they conceal the things people fear. If we don’t say what it is, we can pretend what it isn’t.
I was convinced Planned Parenthood was a good organization. In fact, in college I routinely sent $10 checks to support this organization, which supposedly helped women.
But over the years I changed my mind. It started after my children were born. My mind changed more after I worked in a crisis pregnancy center where ultrasounds were offered to “abortion minded women.” In the dark room, the mothers exclaimed, “Oh my God! It’s a baby!” I only witnessed one woman that year who turned her face away from the screen.
We did not pressure these women to keep their babies. But we did offer them resources such as clothing, blankets, diapers, and formula.
As a counselor, I have heard many stories of women who had abortions. They, like me, bought the lie Planned Parenthood and our no consequences generation told us. It was all supposed to be so easy. Simple.
The women I’ve interacted with sit in the back of the church.
The women I’ve interacted with believe nothing good will come their way.
The women I’ve interacted with think they’ve outsinned God’s ability to forgive.
Why? Because God wired women (and men) to care for vulnerable beings. When emotional pain lingers, people mistakenly assume God’s wrath lingers too. They hide in shame; they don’t tell their stories.
Meanwhile Planned Parenthood gets richer and richer. And $550 million of your tax dollars helps them more.
But something amazing has happened . . .
On July 14th, 2015, David Daleiden and The Center for Medical Progress began releasing undercover operation videos. I remember seeing the first one when it only had 14,000 viewers.
These videos are awful! But I think every adult should watch them. You will see how the veil covering the antics of Planned Parenthood has been torn. A Wilberforce Moment has occured.
So what was behind the curtain?
Abortions. Lots of them. Late term. Body parts for sale. Whole children for sale. And companies paying big bucks for them. Abortion procedures being performed differently so that “intact” specimens can be sold. Check out these stats: http://www.sba-list.org/suzy-b-blog/top-12-reasons-defund-planned-parenthood-now
In case you didn’t know, selling bodies and body parts is illegal. Altering the way the an abortion is done in order to get an intact fetus is illegal.
This afternoon, I was reading the Parable of the Sower in Mark chapter 4. Remember, Jesus said some seed fell along a path and the birds ate it. Some fell on rocky ground. It sprung up and died in the hot sun. Other seeds fell among the thorns and were choked out. But some seed fell on good soil and produced a good crop.
One of my Bible commentaries says,
The parables demand interaction. By their nature they reveal the character of the person who listens (or doesn’t listen) to them.
It got me thinking. In the same way the parables reveal our character, what we do with these videos reveals our character.
In the past two weeks, I’ve had fellow Christians tell me I post too much. Others have shrunk back saying, “What can we do?” And still others tell me they are afraid they might scare away their customers if they speak about the videos.
I’ve also noticed the 30-something Christian bloggers are eerily silent. Who can forget how they clammored, “Black lives matter” this past summer? (Black lives do matter. So do white ones and baby ones.)
Today, Video #5 released. I had to watch from thirty feet away from my computer screen. It’s the worst one of all.
Have you watched the videos?
If so, can you still say Planned Parenthood is for women?
What you do with these videos reveals your character.
